Japan plan to set up Malaysia-Japan International University of Technology (MJIUT) Posted: 28/07/2006 5:19:00 AM Japan Malaysia bilateral meeting EnlargeEnlarge KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 - One of the highlights of the bilateral meeting between Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso and his Malaysian counterpart Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar was the implementation of economic partnership, particularly the establishment of the Malaysia-Japan International University of Technology (MJIUT) in Malaysia. Katori said Japan had, since last December, sent three Japanese academic experts to the university, which was set up last year in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). In the meeting Japan had also discussed Malaysia's effort in securing peace and stability in Mindanao, Japan plans to send an expert to the southern island of the Philippines to establish an economic and social development framework. The Press Secretary of Japan's Foreign Affairs Ministry, Yoshinori Katori, said the expert, who has yet to be identified, would provide recommendations on the kind of assistance Japan could offer. "I cannot tell when exactly our people will be in Mindanao but we are thinking of sending one person first who will look into the economic and social development aspects," he said at a press conference here at the end of the Japanese foreign minister's bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Japan, South Korea, China and Malaysia, respectively. Katori said Japan would also try to establish a support mechanism with the help of its embassy in Manila and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica). He declined to disclose the amount allocated for the development programme. "We are thinking of using the existing flexible framework called the Grassroots Grant Assistance to finance programmes involving education. But the concrete decision will be made later," he said.
