Streamyx Slow - Broadband or Narrowband?

http://www.hot-screensaver.com/2006/03/31/streamyx-slow-broadband-or-narrowband/

Malaysia’s premier broadband, Tmnet Streamyx sucks! I have been experiencing very slow Streamyx connection for more than 3 days already. However, funny enough, the download speed seems to be OK at roughly 460 kbps (Kbits per sec). However, the uploading speed is hopelessly slow, much slowever than the old extinct dialup I guess. Uploading speed test at Streamyx’s website can’t even complete, it just stops at 10% or 20% through the test.

Tmnet Streamyx

Called up their support hotline this morning. So difficult to get through, not until I called close to 10 times did the machine on the other end finally picked up. Then, have to wait for another 5 minutes or so listening to the so boring music did finally a human spoke to me. Went through the same old troubleshooting procedure and filed a report. Took me about 30 minutes to file a simple report! Now, have to wait for 2 to 3 working days for them to fix the problem.

The music from Streamyx:
Your call is important to us. Sorry, all our agents are currently engaged. Please hold while we try to connect you.

Slow uploading speed means can’t upload pictures to my blog. I usually FTP pictures to my server, but since the speed is so slow no pictures larger than 5KB can be uploaded… Anything larger than that have to try my luck by trying many times… After many attempts, sometimes the uploading can go through :)

Now, do you know of any alterntive broadband ISP provider in Klang Valley, Malaysia?

My upload speed is usually superb, reaching way above the cap.

But my download speed…zzz less than half of what I pay for.

    Streamyx again… sigh..

  3. on 31 Mar 2006 at 5:04 pmabe

yeah, it really sucks. streamyx sucks. but what could we do? they’re the only broadband provider in malaysia. they just don’t have any competition. they ‘control’ the broadband.

    it’s not even a band

  5. on 31 Mar 2006 at 6:24 pmJacky

    ShaolinTiger,
I guess download speed is more important, if download speed also die, then can’t even surf websites/blogs.

    WTJ,
Haha… so terrible ah. But, at least on ideal days, their speed quite acceptable lar.

worst broadband company ever. I mean world wide. Had endless problems when I am with them - outages, flakey connection, rude CSRs, point-blank denial that the outage had happened when I complained about them, slow response, unattended calls … just countless..
They are a bunch amatuers who try to earn money from internet-speed-hunger users. I am really really regretted about joinning them….

  34. on 01 Nov 2006 at 1:26 amC

Yeah you people at Peninsula can go ahead and petition, boycott, or even riot. You people don’t care at all about people in Sabah and Sarawak only having TmNet as the only subscriber available. Even if Jaring or Maxis pushes it’s market there, when do you think it will happen?

    TMNET: WIN/LOSE STRATEGY.

p/s who you think is losing?

  35. on 01 Nov 2006 at 3:38 pmedan1979

Yea, we as a customer will lose… they always win… but what can we do… just make comment here… Event the minister complain got no effect on them….

  36. on 13 Nov 2006 at 10:46 pmDullah

After reviewing some of the comments I’m kind of surprised. Around here (K.L.) it’s “known” that a) TMnet has over sold their capacity (created their own chaos and congestion) and b) they are systematically “shaping” network traffic (as I understand it going as far as SPI-stateful packet inspection).

And yes, there are many ISP’s here… unfortunately TMnet controls some of the more important parts of the INET traffic (like the international links). As for “monopolization” this is a direct result of government sheltering. Give every ISP the same ground rules as TMnet (especially in regards to the international links) and you will see not only customer service change dramatically but the “speed” too (might even get ADSL+2).

As for whether you are North or South, East or West this is a “networking” problem (to include Telco to a degree. Old copper POTS wire etc). However, all is not bleek and gloomy, Malaysia Boleh. There are a couple of companies actually trying to take us into the future… wwwhhhooo!!!!… if your in the Penang area check out PenangFON… if in the K.L. area (specifically Petaling Jaya) check out MetroFON. These partner companies are offering Fiber Optic connections. Not only are they Fiber; but it’s 2mb/2mb @ 60RM a month (get that; I pay 66RM monthly for this crappie StreamyHex link which has never been above 384/180. HA!)… In K.L. it’s business only for now… inshaAllah they’ll open it up to consumers soon. Unfortunately, I can’t report on whether they are forced through the same international links yet, as they have not answered all of my queries…

Hope this helps or at least gives “hope” to those whom suffer as I and my wife do :)

  37. on 21 Nov 2006 at 3:57 amonly

    Streamyx is really sucks, Why?
    1st: connection always down
    2nd: connection not stable
3rd: customer service inefficient at all
4th: after i say surf net slow but download fast, then after the service become surf net fast download die… Dunno what is the balance??
    5th: expensive with no QUALTIY

  38. on 21 Nov 2006 at 7:43 pmUnderTypo

    Streamyx > Streemyx > Screamyx

Streamyx, this is the word that will surely appear in any Malaysia forum nowadays. But mostly the word wont be just streamyx, it will become tmnut, suckmyx, streemyx, screamyx and many more, depend on the user imagination.
This is not a joke. There is …

  39. on 01 Jan 2007 at 2:27 pmDrJT

I just downgraded my subscription to the cheapest RM66/mth :) No point paying RM88 and you still getting poor service here.

Pointless to scream & shout here! Just ACT!!! And, soon or later TM will get a clearer message from consumer like yourself (hope so..)

P/s: Last option is to terminate the stupid Streamyx & fall back to my Jaring dial-up instead. At least I’ll be a happier surfer :)

  40. on 05 Jan 2007 at 8:33 pmtheAlps

Hmm…do you think there is any possibility to gather thousands of Streamyx users to pull the plug on Streamyx? I wish to see such a day…because it’s like a light at the end of the tunnel to me.

Their support sucks, no intergration, no process, no Service Level, no urgency, no matter what you do….you’ll get “IN PROGRESS” but actually NOthing is done. Streamyx….way to GO man….DOWN THE DRAIN.

  41. on 30 Jan 2007 at 6:18 pmrealNOOB

OMFG, I checked my download speed on their tool that comes with the Streamyx install disk and i get 0KBits/sec!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I download files at 50KBytes/sec. Anyone know why?

  42. on 31 Jan 2007 at 8:58 amedan1979

That tool is only reliable for local browsing.. and even it is not accurate… done believe in streamyx for everything….

  43. on 25 Feb 2007 at 10:39 amvictor

Streamyx must think Malaysians are so rich nowadays that they’ll pay anything to keep their Internet connection even though they are being fleeced and know it. They are probably right.

  44. on 05 Apr 2007 at 4:32 amkent_904

I purposely find this website to post my comment… Streamyx su*ks, always slow and disconnect or hang. Why? Is it because of too many consumer paying RM99 each month for share holders and manager to enjoy great profit and having vacation in other country or sea side with bikini girls?

    My problem:
    1. connection slow… RM99 package
    2. always disconnect
    3. call tmnet and tmnet give me some romance music only… after 8pm
    4. call tmnet with the staff who in his or her mouth eating something talk with me
    5. called tmnet services department need change line to 3-4 department and traveling their company department
    6. playing online game will disconnect… connection won’t stay connect more than half an hour
    7. lousy modem supplied by tmnet… (hua wei_)
    8. i remember the step to call tmnet services department… coz i always do so…
call 1300889515.. press 1 1 3… then direct go inside streamyx technical support; name, phone number, login id, register name, then restart modem… i have repeated thousands of times
    9. unresponsive to problem occur… eyes closed by profit or colourful paper money which we earn by our blood
    10. streamyx gonna have competitor like MAS monopoly the market and now airasia give a hard kick at their ass

  45. on 10 Apr 2007 at 10:30 pmDarth Vader

    All,

If you hate Streamyx so much, stop using it.
The reasons they are the monopoly, cause no one in the right mine would go into broadband business in this country, it just not a profitable business. The copper wire that goes to your home cost RM3k-7k per line. They have to lay a pair ( or two) copper wires from their exchange all the way to your home. Even if they are on wireless, the backbone transmission would cost few hundred millions a year.
Think abour all the international circuits. They all cost couple of millions for each E1 ( E1 = 2 mbit/s ). If you have few hundreds E1, just multiply the cost.
Maxis was trying to become ISP before back in the late 90s, but close shop after few months.
Jaring, they can try. Their speed may feel fast since not many using them. If they have as much subs as TM, they definitely be even worse. They might just drop the traffic to ride on TM circuit anyway. Can they afford to have dedicated trans-atlantic STM-x capacity to US (which is the internet hub)? I don’t think so.
THe reasons Steamyx are slow, because of their backbone, cause too many riding on it. Ideally they should spend billion to leased additional international circuits so that no one will experience congestion. But then again there’s no really good reason for them to do it, cause most of the traffics on that circuit will be P2P, and you’ll know that the most popular P2P contents among malaysian are pornography material. So no benefit to the country.
I would support 100% if TM totally block P2P, that would definitely ease the congestion.

  46. on 11 Apr 2007 at 11:42 pmfuhrer

Darth Vader, if you said the most popular P2P contents among malaysian are pornography material, your computer must be full of porn too. Not all P2P aim for porn.
After experience my friend’s internet in Singapore , the download speed are 10 times much faster than my 512Kbps even it is using wireless network. I agreed that upload/download speed are too low, yet we have no choice for monopoly market, and hope that they won’t block/track torrent as Hong Kong, making whole country internet user being isolated.

  47. on 25 May 2007 at 12:08 pmakukayabiz

It’s true that streamyx is slow or the provider is slow too. Tmnet must overcome whatever the problems they’re facing do not blame on customers. But our money is more faster to them…yeaah. Please solve..it.

If I buy a TMNet 1 m/bit link could you please just be honest and tell me what it means.

I assume it means I can download data of any form off the internet at 1 m/bit per second. I assume my internet usage is private and not filtered or monitored.

If when I buy this service this is not the case please let me know.

Because I am beginning to think that with TMNet,

You get what “we TMNet” give you.

    We will filter your downloads.

Interruptions and congestion is your bad luck.

WE have every right to oversell and oversubscribe our service in any way we wish.

I think this is extremely sad for Malaysia. I had high hopes that Malaysia would be the information super highway.

A wheel has certainly fallen of the cart some where along the way.

  50. on 21 Jun 2007 at 6:42 pmvlseng

Let me tell you guys the reason.
Malaysia can still offer 384K bandwidth? Popular plan at 512K & 1Mbps?

Advanced and developed countries are offering over 25Mbps.
including Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, China.
That’s after the government push for competition and unbundling.
(some even before unbundling are also running at >4Mbps)

Still Malaysia want to claim to be IT hub? gosh! No wonder Malaysia Telcos are making money…and economic booming (just a little)
All at the expense of people welfare
Guess you people should start to demand.

  51. on 22 Jun 2007 at 1:37 ampelangi

i’m a resident in JB, i don’t how you all in other areas such as KL or Selangor where the central government reside. it’s really sucks their service and response, everytime i need to get help from them, I must at least try more than 5 times to get some appropriate response and asking to service problem which is obviously due to TMNET Streamyx faulty, I have to like begging them for help which sometime even no action from them. I wonder why i have to bear this kind problem while paying at the price of not seemingly fair.

Didn’t go through all the comment incase this havent been suggested, try izzi net, wireless:no need to attach TM phone line. But not all area are covered and better to test it out at your home due to thier radio station not enough yet…anyway still better than streamyx in worst.
